The near-miss rule

The danger after a failure is quitting, not the failure.

PSWe reviewed the research on it.Setbacks and coming back

Hand-drawn diagram of framework 184, The near-miss rule: The danger after a failure is quitting, not the failure.
Framework 184 · in one look
How to use it

No quitting decisions for 7 days after a public setback. Day one: be kind, not harsh. Within 48 hours: debrief. Then retry with the one change. In grant data, people who narrowly missed were more likely to quit, and the ones who stayed did better later.

How sure we are

P Evidence: promising. Good studies, but small or few. Use it and keep checking.

S Evidence: strong. Large trials or many studies, pointing the same way.
